The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced that the Federal Government has commenced the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The project, which has been mired in controversy and delays since the Obasanjo administration, is now underway with contractors mobilized to the site.

Keyamo emphasized the critical necessity of a second runway for the nation's capital, stating that it is inconceivable for Abuja to operate with just one runway.

He highlighted the potential risks and inconveniences, such as diverting foreign heads of state in case of any issues with the existing runway.

The minister also mentioned that the ministry will ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous improvement in Nigeria's rating by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Additionally, Keyamo announced the resumption of cargo flights between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, which had been suspended for a long time.

He noted that globally, air cargo trade accounts for 35% of world trade and attracts about $6 trillion annually, and Nigeria was missing out on this sector.

The minister expressed his commitment to continue interacting with various countries to explore opportunities for resuming cargo trade.
