The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUSTA) has warned that poor funding could lead to the collapse of the institution.

The union's chairman, Dr. Abubakar Birnin-Yauri, made this statement during a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on June 21, 2024.

Dr. Birnin-Yauri highlighted several issues affecting the university, including poor infrastructure, inadequate student hostels, and non-payment of earned academic allowances for 11 years.

He also mentioned that lecturers have not received promotion implementations or arrears, leading to a mass exodus of over 20 academic staff.

The union chairman further emphasized that poor electricity supply is hindering research works in the laboratory, and the university's structures are insufficient to accommodate its growing workforce.

He also expressed concerns about the university clinic, which has had no doctor since its establishment, and the security of the university, which has seen a lecturer kidnapped and another marked for killing.

Dr. Birnin-Yauri appealed to the Kebbi State government to address these issues to prevent the collapse of the university. He expressed confidence that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abubakar, would take steps to resolve the problems and save the institution.

In response to the allegations, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Abubakar Tunga, denied them through a text message and directed journalists to visit the university for further information. However, he declined to comment on the unpaid academic earned allowances and promotions implementations.
