The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), has announced its plans to introduce a new program focused on waste management and technology starting in the 2025/2026 academic session.

This announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, during the launch of the Zero Waste Campus Project, which is supported by the Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF).

Professor Rim-Rukeh emphasized the university's role as a leader in addressing environmental roadblocks, particularly those related to improper waste management.

He stated, “Through our Center for Waste Management, we are collaborating with partners to convert waste into valuable resources for societal benefit.”

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that FUPRE is committed to enhancing its educational offerings by addressing gaps in knowledge regarding sustainability.

He mentioned plans for a Post Graduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology, which aims to equip students with essential skills for effective waste management practices.

In his remarks, Richard Benin, Executive Director of CODAF, urged other tertiary institutions to prioritize responsible consumption and waste reduction. He noted that FUPRE is pioneering this initiative in Nigeria and to set a precedent as the first Zero Waste University in Africa.

The Zero Waste Campus Project is designed not only to minimize plastic waste but also to foster a community engaged in sustainable practices, which includes educational initiatives that encourage students and staff to actively participate in waste reduction efforts.
