The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Emmanuel Osodeke, has criticized governors for establishing state universities that they cannot adequately fund.

Osodeke alleged that most governors are duplicating universities in their states to gain access to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which was established as an intervention fund for public universities.

Osodeke stated that any governor who is currently establishing a university is doing so with the aim of tapping into TETFund as a source of funding. He claimed that politicians and civil servants now view TETFund as a "cash cow" to be exploited through shady procurement processes and contract fraud.

The ASUU president argued that TETFund was created as an intervention fund, not the primary source of funding for universities, which should be the responsibility of the federal and state governments.

He called for a more transparent and inclusive process in the allocation and spending of TETFund resources, involving stakeholders such as the university community, lecturers, and student groups.

Osodeke emphasized the need to create a structure that would allow for stakeholder involvement in assessing and approving the use of TETFund resources, rather than allowing individuals to dictate projects and act as contractors.
