Nationwide Strike: ASUU Confirmed, CONUA Undecided

Gbadamosi Azeezah

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have confirmed their participation in the nationwide strike. However, the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), a rival academic staff union, has not yet taken a stance on the issue.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke of ASUU and Dr. Niyi Sunmonu of CONUA expressed their positions during discussions with our newsmen.

Osodeke emphasized ASUU's affiliation with the NLC, indicating their support for NLC actions. Sunmonu mentioned convening an emergency meeting to assess the situation and determine the next steps.

Prof. Kayode Adebayo, the Chairman of ASUU at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), highlighted the deadline for the NLC and the government to resolve the matter by midnight on Sunday. He suggested that if an agreement is reached, a strike may be averted, but if not, all NLC affiliates would join.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) directed its members to comply with the NLC's directive for a comprehensive workplace closure starting from Monday, June 3, 2024.
