SoTLAN Urges FG to Use Public Analysts for Cholera Water Testing

Gbadamosi Azeezah

The Society of Testing Laboratory Analysts of Nigeria (SoTLAN) has expressed concern over the ongoing cholera outbreak affecting Lagos and Ogun States.

The organization is urging the government to take immediate action to safeguard public health by deploying Public Analysts to conduct comprehensive water quality testing in the affected areas.

SoTLAN President Olugbenga Ogunmoyela stated that the deaths resulting from the outbreak are due to inadequate public awareness of the causes and preventive measures. He emphasized the critical need for prompt action to protect public health.

Ogunmoyela explained that under the IPAN Act, Public Analysts are the only professionals authorized to test water and food samples and confirm their wholesomeness. He emphasized the importance of mobilizing these analysts to test water sources, including wells, boreholes, and municipal supplies, in all affected areas.

SoTLAN called on the government to facilitate collaboration between the Ministries of Health and Water Resources and Public Analysts to ensure an effective response. They also urged the government to inform the public about the steps being taken and provide guidance on how to protect themselves during this outbreak.

The Society advised Nigerians to take precautions such as boiling water before use, practicing good hygiene, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing cholera symptoms.

SoTLAN remains committed to supporting the government in addressing this public health issue swiftly and effectively. They urge the authorities to act promptly in commissioning Licensed Public Analysts and implementing necessary measures to overcome this challenge and ensure the well-being of communities.
