Abuja American School Returns $760,000 to EFCC from Yahaya Bello

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the reimbursement of $760,000 in advanced school fees, initially paid by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, for his children at the American International School, Abuja.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, verified the refund, stating that the entire amount had been returned to the EFCC's recovery account.

Earlier, the school had requested accurate banking details from the EFCC to facilitate the refund. Bello allegedly utilized $720,000 from Kogi State Government funds to prepay tuition for five of his children at the school.

The EFCC's attempted arrest of Bello on April 17th, over alleged fraud, coincided with these developments.

The school specified that $845,852 had been paid in tuition from September 7th, 2021 to date, with $760,910 eligible for refund after deducting rendered educational services.

Any further deposits by the Bello family would be reported to the EFCC.

AISA revealed that Yahaya Bello had contacted the school in August 2021 to prepay school fees until his children graduate.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed that Bello transferred $720,000 from government coffers to a bureau de change for the advance payment, emphasizing the impropriety of such actions, particularly in a financially challenged state like Kogi.
