Bridge Collapse in Northern Colombia Claims Four Lives

In northern Colombia, a tragic accident occurred on Friday when two cars and a motorcycle plunged from a partially collapsed bridge, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to three others.

Julio Olaya, a traffic police chief, reported that a section of the bridge connecting the city of Barranquilla to the airport in Soledad gave way during heavy rains. "Three people died at the scene, and another succumbed to injuries later in the hospital," Olaya confirmed.

In response to the collapse, authorities have closed the bridge to prevent further accidents and are directing traffic to alternative routes to the airport. Officials are concerned that other sections of the bridge may also be at risk of collapsing.

The Colombian government has issued a warning that the El Niño weather phenomenon is expected to cause an unusually wet rainy season in 2024, potentially leading to more such incidents.
