The Cross River State Government is implementing measures to mitigate the impact of potential flooding, following predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The 2024 forecast identified the state as flood-prone.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar on Friday, Cross River Commissioner for Environment, Moses Osogi, detailed the government's proactive steps to address the impending flood risks.

“We are doing everything necessary to ensure that the impact is reduced to the barest minimum. We shall also ensure that those in flood-prone areas are safe. Apart from the sensitisation programmes being carried out by the government, those in flood-prone areas have been advised to move to the upland,” Osogi said.

He acknowledged that while flooding is a natural occurrence, the geographic location of Cross River makes it particularly vulnerable. The state government is actively working in line with NiMet's predictions and warnings.

“As part of efforts to mitigate the impact, we have cleared most drainage and water channels across the state for easy flow of water. Those in the riverine and flood-prone areas have also been advised to relocate to the upland for safety. For those moving, the government, through the State Emergency Management Agency, is working on shelter for them,” he added.

Osogi warned residents against constructing buildings on waterways, emphasizing that the state government will prosecute anyone violating this order.

NiMet's 2024 annual flood outlook indicated that 148 local governments in 31 states are at high risk of flooding. Recently, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, noted that several states have already started experiencing various levels of flooding and related disasters, primarily due to high rainfall and inadequate drainage systems.
