Dismissed Soldier Arrested for Kidnapping, Extortion in Osun

Boluwatife Adedokun

Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Osun State Police Command have apprehended Emmanuel Anthony, a 34-year-old dismissed soldier, for his role in a kidnapping operation and the extortion of N3 million from victims.

Anthony, who claimed to have served in the Nigerian Army for over 14 years, including a United Nations mission, was dismissed in January 2024 for desertion, insubordination, and other acts of misconduct.

Details of the Crime

On May 31, 2024, Anthony and an accomplice, David Agbebaku, travelled from Ibadan to Esa-Oke, Osun State, wearing military uniforms. The duo kidnapped two victims, Amole Muiz and Adegoke Gbenga, and forced them to transfer N3 million into a Moniepoint account before releasing them.

The incident was reported to the police, leading to an investigation that traced Anthony to Ibadan, where he was arrested. Agbebaku remains in custody in Oyo State.

During his parade at the police headquarters, Anthony admitted to using fake military ranks during the operation. He also confessed to purchasing the paraphernalia and acknowledged his actions, expressing regret and seeking forgiveness.

Police Statement

Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola revealed that the gang also held two other victims, Olawumi Oluwaseun and Ishola, hostage during the operation. They were robbed of two iPhones worth N1.25 million before being released.

Opalola confirmed that detectives positively identified Anthony as one of the perpetrators. “He will be charged to court accordingly,” she said, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices involved in the crime.
