Ahead of the festive season, the Federal Government has initiated a significant road repair initiative aimed at enhancing traffic flow on federal highways across Nigeria.

The program, named “Operation Connect to Your Destination” Phase 2, was officially launched in Kano State by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

During the launch, FERMA Managing Director Engr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi detailed the ambitious goals of the project.

By its conclusion, FERMA plans to patch 18,850 square meters of road surface, rehabilitate over 12,000 deteriorated sections, overlay 2,700 square meters of road, and ensure that 653 kilometers of roadway are motorable.

Agbasi highlighted the purpose of the initiative: “Operation Connect to Your Destination is designed to enhance journey times and alleviate traffic congestion during the festive period. We recognize that traffic flows increase significantly between the north and south during this time. This program will identify bottlenecks along key routes to facilitate smoother commuter movement”

The agency has strategically identified and prioritized maintenance work in traffic-prone areas to maximize the positive impact on road users.

Additionally, Agbasi noted that the project is expected to create over 12,000 jobs, contributing to local economic growth.

Engr. Sani Abdulkadir, head of FERMA’s Direct Labour Department, indicated that the roadworks are scheduled for completion by mid-December to minimize disruptions during the holiday season.

The initiative has also garnered support from local authorities. Umar Matazu, Sector Commander of Kano State’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Abdulsalam Kabiru, welcomed the repairs and urged drivers to exercise caution and drive responsibly once maintenance is completed.
