The prosecution made an oral application on Tuesday, August 15, at the federal high court in Ikoyi to drop the initial charge and replace it with 20 new charges, as reported by The Cable.

Emefiele had been arraigned on Tuesday, July 25, facing a two-count charge related to "illegal possession of firearms" at the federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos. However, following a clash between the Department of State Services (DSS) and prison officials, he was rearrested.

During the recent court session on August 15, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the federal ministry of justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the decision to introduce new charges came after further investigations were conducted.

Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Abubakar clarified that the fresh charges had been filed at the federal capital territory (FCT) high court in Abuja.

Among the new counts is an accusation against Emefiele for "conferring unlawful advantages."
