Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety, has requested a unified approach to solve the high incidence of road accidents in Nigeria, specifically during the ’ember months’.
Mohammed initiated a more comprehensive safety campaign, stressing the importance of cooperation from all sectors of society to improve road safety.
During a two-day workshop for FRSC management staff in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed noted that road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people globally and in Nigeria.
He affirmed that, as Africa’s most populous youth demographic, Nigeria stands to suffer substantial losses if road safety is not prioritised.
“The major cause of death among youths is road traffic crashes. If we do not work together to curb these incidents, we endanger our future.
Everyone—from government officials, vehicle manufacturers, engineers, or road users—has a responsibility to contribute to safer roads,” he asserted.
The campaign, titled “Retooling FRSC for Organisational Effectiveness from Policy Formulation to Strategic Implementation,” seeks to enhance road safety by implementing stricter law enforcement measures and improving public awareness.
ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC Public Education Officer, hinted that this year’s campaign is unique in its emphasis on passenger rights, empowering them to voice concerns about reckless driving.
“This year’s campaign is unique. We are emphasising not only educating drivers but also informing passengers of their rights and encouraging them to speak up against reckless driving, Ogungbemide asserted.
This season, the FRSC is expanding its outreach efforts beyond traditional methods like motor park visits.
The FRSC’s approach this season also involves expanded outreach efforts beyond traditional methods like motor park visits.
With a lineup of mega town hall meetings, motorcades, and transit camp stops across Nigeria, the Corps aims to engage road users more directly and foster a safety-first culture.
