On Friday, October 4, 2024, the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stopped an attempt by men in police uniform, allegedly led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, to break into the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The invaders, assumed to be acting on directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, attempted to seize classified data meant for Saturday’s local government elections.

It was gathered that the officers arrived at the RSIEC facility at 1 a.m., trying to breach the gates and go to the strong room containing important election materials. However, vigilant security personnel at the scene swiftly issued a warning, inciting quick action from RSIEC staff, who informed Governor Fubara.

The governor quickly assembled a high-powered rescue team, including lawmakers from the national and state assemblies, top government officials, and political leaders. This group went to the RSIEC headquarters on Aba Road to tackle the situation.

Interacting with journalists outside the RSIEC office, Governor Fubara criticised the actions of the rogue officers, blaming the Inspector-General of going against his authority, possibly as a result of political connections in Abuja. He stressed that local government elections fall under the control of the state and should remain free from federal interruption.

The governor, however, condemned the effort to replace the police officers already stationed at the facility with personnel from another state, portraying it as an illegal and politically motivated action.

In a bold move, Fubara promised to provide alternative security if necessary to make sure that the elections continue peacefully on Saturday.
