On Friday, the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, presided over by Magistrate O.Y. Adefope, remanded a 30-year-old hotel manager, GodsWill Akpan, for allegedly stealing N360,000 entrusted to him.

The defendant was charged with one count of theft for allegedly taking N360,000 while working as the manager of Switch Guest House. The complainant, Owolabi Daniel, employed Akpan and required him to deliver N180,000 from weekly sales.

According to report, it was discovered that Akpan made sales for two weeks but failed to remit the money into the owner's account, allegedly absconding with N360,000. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful.

Following a report to the police, Akpan was arrested and questioned. He did not deny the allegations.

Prosecutor Haruna Magaji informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on April 8, 2024, and violated Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015. Magaji also stated that there was evidence that Akpan received money from hotel guests and made more than the amount required for weekly delivery.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Adefope set bail at N500,000 and required two sureties. The case was adjourned until July 17, 2024, for mention, and Akpan was ordered to be detained in police custody until he met the bail conditions.
