House of Reps Lift Ban on Sale of Alcohol in Sachets

Idongesit Udoewah

The House of Representatives has announced the lifting of the nationwide ban on alcoholic drinks in sachets. The decision was disclosed by Hon. Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson for the House, at a press conference in Abuja.

Hon. Agbese revealed that the ban, which was first enforced to combat the abuse of alcohol, will be lifted within the next five years after a thorough review of the economic implications.

The decision comes after the House conducted a detailed inquiry that included consultations with civil society organisations, business groups, and other stakeholders.

The House Committee on NAFDAC, chaired by Hon Regina Akume, recommended lifting the ban in light of the current economic realities and the impact on livelihoods.

The revised regulations, however, require alcohol producers to put out a notice of warning on the sachets, cautioning consumers about the potential health risks associated with alcohol consumption.
