The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement until a thorough investigation into the matter is completed.

This follows the adoption of a motion by the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki, and 88 other members, during Tuesday's plenary session.

The motion called attention to certain clauses in the agreement that are allegedly offensive and promote LGBTQ+ rights, which are against existing laws in Nigeria. The House has also mandated its relevant committees to investigate the contentious provisions of the agreement.

However, the Nigerian government has countered the claim that the agreement contains a clause to legalize same-sex relationships in the country, stating that Nigeria has "existing legislation against same-sex relationships."

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, have also stated that Nigeria will not enter into any agreement that is antithetical to the Constitution or the religious and cultural sensibilities of the Nigerian people.

The Samoa Agreement is the overarching legal framework for the European Union's relations with 79 countries, including 48 African, 16 Caribbean, and 15 Pacific countries.
