Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State, has proposed that the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) programme should be held for two years with one year used for mandatory military training.

Ishaku noted this as a guest on Channels TV ‘Politics Today’ show on Sunday, January 14, while speaking on the spate of insecurity in the country.

“We must be practical,” the governor reiterated.  “Train people, give them practical induction, let them know what to do. If you ask me, the NYSC, I will say should be two years.

“One year for compulsory military training and the other year for the social works that they are doing now, so that anybody that graduates as an NYSC person can know how to handle a gun, can know how to defend himself just like it’s done in Israel, Lebanon and other places.

He said citizens must be engaged so that they can be proactive.

He posited that people must be allowed to protect themselves if security cannot be provided.

“Constitution or no constitution, you first have to be alive.”
