Lagos Orders Demolition of Collapsing Police Barracks

The Lagos State Government has issued a warning regarding the imminent risk of building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks located in Onigbongbo, Ikeja.

This announcement comes as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) prepares to carry out an emergency evacuation and subsequent demolition of the old Block 3 section of the barracks.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, indicated that an assessment conducted by the agency's response team revealed that certain parts of the structure are in a precarious state.

Consequently, both the affected building and nearby structures will be evacuated promptly to mitigate any potential loss of life or property.

Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The findings indicate that immediate evacuation is necessary. We are implementing a response plan that includes assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition."

He noted that this pre-emptive action is being undertaken under the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu due to the hazardous condition of the building and the risk of secondary incidents if left unaddressed.

Furthermore, Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents in the vicinity to remain calm and avoid disseminating misinformation on social media platforms.

He reassured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and managed to ensure safety during this critical time.
