Lagos to Clear 100 Shanties Under Adeniji Adele Bridge on Monday

Gbadamosi Azeezah

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to clear more than 100 shanties located under the Adeniji Adele bridge starting Monday, May 6, 2024.

This decision was revealed by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, during an interview with journalists on Sunday.

Wahab emphasized that the removal follows a 48-hour notice served to the occupants to vacate the premises along with their belongings.

He stated that the operation will be carried out by the Kick Against Indiscipline operatives and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance department, with adequate security support.

According to him, this action aligns with the government's commitment to reclaiming ungoverned spaces in Lagos and the shanties not only pose sanitation concerns but also serve as hubs for criminal activities and drug peddling.

Wahab urged the shanty occupants to vacate voluntarily for their own safety before the enforcement operation commences on Monday.

Previously, a similar operation was conducted in Ikoyi, where illegal structures were removed from beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge. Out of 450 squatters apprehended, 371 requested relocation to their respective states, as disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho.
