On Tuesday, the Ogun State House of Assembly urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate the alleged illegal arrest and detention of innocent people of the state on trumped-up charges by the police in collaboration with some suspected land grabbers in the state.

The Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, appealed plenary as lawmakers took turns reporting endemic incidences of land grabbing in their respective constituencies while contributing to the debate on the second reading of the State Anti-land Grabbing (Amendment) bill.

This was said in a statement made by the state assembly's head of information, Lawal Jamiu.

Oluomo stated that hundreds of innocent people of the state had continued to languish in various police detention cells, both at Alagbon in Lagos and at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, as a result of land grabbers' collusion with some security agents against innocent members of the public.

He urged the IG to intervene to ensure that innocent individuals are not punished as a result of fabricated charges.

He advised that any land-related issues be brought to court while promising that a new amendment to the bill titled: H. B. No. 006/ OG/ 2023- Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, Violence, and Other Related Offences (Amendment) Law, 2023 would ensure the formation of a task force by the State Government to handle land-related issues.

Earlier in the debate, the bill's sponsor, Hon. Damilola Soneye, bemoaned that land-grabbing had become widespread in the state, necessitating the need for the modification to make the law more effective and efficient.

Other lawmakers, including Minority Leader Olalekan Adeleye, Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, Waliu Owode, Olusegun Odunuga, Wasiu Ayodele, Fola Salami, Oluseun Adesanya, and Babatunde Tella, stated that the activities of the land grabbers have been affecting the state's peace, development, and progress, necessitating the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat the problem.
