The law firm of Deji Adeyanju, known as Deji and Partners has announced it will no longer represent Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver who was allegedly assaulted by Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a house of Representatives member representing Aba North/South of Abia State.

This was revealed on Friday, November 8, 2024 by famous activist Deji Adeyanju, via a post on X (formally Twitter).

According to journalists, the incident happened on October 28, 2024, when Ikwechegh allegedly abused Abuwatseya, who had arrived to deliver a package to him.

A video which was circulated on social media captured the altercation at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, showing the rep member repeatedly slapping and insulting Abuwatseya, who had asked that Ikwechegh come outside to collect a package of snails meant for delivery.

The incident was condemned by Nigerians who demanded for an investigation.

After enquiries at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, a Kuje Magistrates’ Court granted Ikwechegh release of ₦500,000. He was charged on three counts: abuse of office, assault, and threat to life. The case was adjourned until November 8, 2024, for a hearing.

Meanwhile, in a video recording released by journalists on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Abuwatseya apologized to Ikwechegh, expressing regret for annoying the lawmaker and asking Nigerians for forgiveness.

In a statement released on Friday, Deji Adeyanju and Partners announced its withdrawal in a document titled “Public Statement on the Alleged Assault on Mr Stephen Abuwatseya: Withdrawal of Legal Representation,” explaining the decision as important to protect the firm’s integrity.
