A man was arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly exhuming and beheading a corpse for ritual purposes in the Car Wash area of Abeokuta.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed to our correspondent on Tuesday that the suspect, Lekan Akinyemi, was arrested on Monday following a report from a concerned resident, Nojeem Balogun, about suspicious activities near his father’s grave.

Balogun revealed that upon inspecting his father’s grave, he discovered that the head of the corpse had been severed.

Acting on the report, officers from the Adatan Division swiftly apprehended Akinyemi.

Odutola detailed, “Nojeem Balogun, who resides around Iyana Cele Car Wash, Abeokuta, reported to the police station that on June 23, 2024, at about 0800hrs, one of his siblings noticed unusual activities at their late father’s grave in Isale Itoko, Abeokuta.

“Upon closer inspection, they found that their father’s head had been removed by an unidentified person or group. Further investigation identified Lekan Akinyemi as the individual responsible for exhuming the grave and severing the head.”

She added that Akinyemi was caught in the act, and the case will be handed over to the Anti-Robbery unit for further investigation before being transferred to the State CID.

The PPRO assured residents of Ogun State of the command’s dedication to combating crime and ensuring the safety of the community.
