The Ogun State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, has disrupted a self-kidnap scheme allegedly planned by 41-year-old Enitan Awoyemi to avoid repaying a N1 million debt.

According to a statement by Brigadier General Alade Adedigba (retd.), the Amotekun Commander, Awoyemi, a resident of Irolu-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area, staged his own abduction to escape gambling-related debts.

On November 10, Awoyemi’s wife, Mrs. Tope Awoyemi, reported to the Amotekun Irolu outpost that her husband had contacted her, claiming he had been kidnapped by unknown individuals demanding a N5 million ransom for his release.

An investigation by the Amotekun Intelligence team soon revealed Awoyemi’s extensive gambling debts of about N1 million. Known for his frequent gambling, Awoyemi had previously won N6 million, using part of it to purchase a Toyota Corolla Sport and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle for commercial purposes. Facing pressure from unpaid debts, he resorted to faking his own kidnapping.

Working with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and local stakeholders, Amotekun officers tracked Awoyemi to Ijagba town and then to Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. He was apprehended early Wednesday at Irolu Okada Park during routine patrols. Officers noticed a strong smell of insecticide on him, raising concerns of a suicide attempt, and he was immediately taken to Rufina Private Hospital in Iperu for medical care.

Brigadier General Adedigba confirmed that Awoyemi would face legal action after his recovery. “Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be handed over to the police for further proceedings,” he stated.

The Amotekun Commander praised the community’s cooperation that led to Awoyemi’s apprehension, encouraging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. “This incident highlights the importance of community support in maintaining safety and security,” Adedigba emphasized.
