The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has accepted the payment of eight-month salary arrears valued at about N467 million, which were owed to the academic, non-academic, and casual workers of the Enugu State College of Education, Technical (ESCET) before his administration.

A breakdown of the authorization includes the eight-month salary arrears of 299 academic staff and non-academic workers of ESCET, estimated at N384 million, the salary arrears of part-time lecturers amounting to N69.2 million, and the salary arrears of casual staff worth N13.8 million. The total came to N467,061,600.

The government says this is in line with Governor Mbah's pledge to revitalise education in the state.

Recall that Governor Mbah’s administration allocated N158.78bn, representing 33% of the state’s 2024 budget for the education sector. This is the largest share ever allocated to education in the state, both per person and as a percentage of the total budget. It even surpasses the recommended range of 15-20% of the total annual budget for education set by UNESCO.
