Police Investigate Ebonyi Varsity Student’s Abduction, Killing

The Ebonyi State Police Command disclosed on Thursday that it had commenced looking into the case of Magnus Okeke, a 400-level student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, who was allegedly kidnapped and killed by members of the host community. 

DSP Joshua Ukandu, an Ebonyi State Police spokesperson who reported the incident to journalists on Thursday, affirmed that Okeke's remains have been found and taken to the mortuary while the command has commenced an investigation with a view to apprehending and prosecuting his killers.

A university source, who preferred not to be identified, revealed to journalists that the student was involved in a minor motorcycle accident on his way to his hostel from school during the penultimate week.

According to the source, the student spoke with some youths and victims of the accident before departing with them for an undisclosed location.

He revealed that the university community became worried because the student never came back after the accident. 

The source explained that the student was dogged from being hit by an oncoming motorcycle, causing injuries to some people from the Ikwo community. So, the guys were demanding treatment, and he followed them; since then, he has not been found.

The eyewitness said, the student’s remains were later found near a river in the community.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Elom Ubochi, confirmed the kidnapping and murder of Okeke.

In a statement made available by Ubochi, he said, “It is with great concern that we inform the university community of the kidnapping of Magnus Okeke, an extra-year student of the Department of Accountancy, on June 1, 2024.

The incident happened outside the university premises while on his way back to the private hostel where he resided in Ohankwu village, Ndufu-Alike community.

He said investigations by security forces showed that the alleged perpetrators of the heinous crime were youths from Ohankwu village, allegedly chaired by Ogobuchi Uhuo, popularly known as OG Royal.
