The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has offered his heartfelt sympathy to the family of Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former justice of the Supreme Court and Nigeria’s judiciary, following his death.
Tinubu also communicated his condolences to members of the bar and bench all over the country mourning the death of this distinguished jurist.
A press release made available by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said throughout his illustrious career, Justice Ogwuegbu mentored numerous judges and lawyers.
Justice Ogwuegbu was born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State. He committed about five decades to the judiciary, culminating in his appointment as a Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.
He also served as president of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
Following the return of the country to democracy in 1999, Justice Ogwuegbu was elected to chair the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which probed human rights abuses during the military regime.
Tinubu honored Justice Ogwuegbu’s lasting impact and applauded his steadfast dedication to justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
He projected on Justice Ogwuegbu’s key role in transforming Nigeria’s judiciary into an institution where justice persists without fear or favor.
The president believed that Justice Ogwuegbu promoting the values of discipline, excellence, and integrity all his life has left a lasting impression on Nigeria’s legal landscape.
President Tinubu said Justice Ogwuegbu’s benchmark judgments, especially those on federalism, university autonomy, individual rights under the Nigerian Constitution, banking regulations, and monetary policy, will persist to serve as guiding principles and reference points in Nigerian law.
He offered prayers for divine comfort for the family of the late elder statesman and eternal peace for Justice Ogwuegbu’s soul.
