President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all minors detained by the Nigeria Police in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests held last August.

This directive was announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an emergency briefing at the Aso Rock Villa on Monday.

The President's decision comes in light of recent charges against 76 individuals, including 30 minors, for treason and inciting a military coup after they were seen waving Russian flags during the protests.

Idris stated that after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the detentions, Tinubu emphasized the need to balance legal proceedings with humanitarian considerations. "The President has directed that all of them be released immediately," he confirmed.

The protests, which erupted due to widespread dissatisfaction with economic conditions and governance, led to significant unrest and the subsequent arrest of individuals across various states, including Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano. The minors involved are aged between 14 and 17 and have been in custody for three months.

In addition to the release order, Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to prioritize the welfare of these minors and ensure their reunification with their families. An Administrative Committee will also be established to review all aspects related to their arrest and treatment.

Furthermore, Tinubu mandated an investigation into the actions of law enforcement officials involved in these arrests, promising disciplinary measures for any misconduct uncovered. "The President has directed that all law enforcement agents involved in the arrest will be investigated," Idris added.

Meanwhile, plans are reportedly underway to withdraw charges against the minors as the Federal High Court prepares for further proceedings regarding the broader group of #EndBadGovernance protesters.
