The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, March 6, justified the blockage and apprehension of 21 trucks loaded with food items allegedly being driven into neighboring countries, relating it as economic sabotage.

Mr Dele Oyewale, spokesman of the commission, while answering questions from journalists on Radio 97.3Fm, affirmed that investigations showed that the foodstuffs were cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of the EFCC personnels..

The EFCC spokesperson said: “Whatever that has a negative stance on the economy as an act of economic wreck or serving as a leakage, misrepresentation or fluctuations in the economy, the commission has an authority to solve it and that is what the EFCC has done.

“It is not that the EFCC is throwing its nets with regard to the borders. An apprehension can be made anywhere and the moonshiner was apprehended at the doorway routes leading to Cameroon and Chad due to the productiveness of our supervision.

“They could have equally been apprehended anywhere else but the most essential thing is that they were apprehended for allegedly rustling food items that could be useful to Nigerians, which they were not allowed to take out of the country.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is proactive and it is everywhere to ensure that the economy is reformed so that Nigerians can get the most advantageous value.

“So, I think Nigerians should commend the EFCC more for being so energetic enough to resolve such incidental crimes. We all need to partner to make sure that this issue of economic sabotage is directly addressed.”
