Youths Shut Down Oil Service Companies in Rivers State

Idongesit Udoewah

On Tuesday, Youths from the Finima community in Rivers State's Bonny local government area shut down two major oil service companies, Daewoo Engineering and Construction Limited and Saipem Construction Nigeria Limited, in a bold move against what they perceived as marginalization and neglect.

The companies are major contractors to Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) in its ongoing Train Seven Project.

The determined youths blocked the companies' gates, preventing employees from entering or leaving, in spite of hours of heavy downpours.
The protesters are demanding the implementation of the Local Content Development Act of 2017, which stipulates the inclusion of host communities in major projects.

They claim that their community has been side-lined in the ongoing Train Seven Project, an extensive project expected to boost the country's gas production and economic growth.

Regarding the protest, Saipem Construction Nigeria Limited, Daewoo Engineering and Construction Limited, and NLNG have not yet provided an official statement.
