Oluomo Sunday Akere, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has revealed that the party may shift its focus to the Osun West Senatorial District for its 2026 governorship candidate if former Governor Gboyega Oyetola opts not to run.
Akere, who served as a Special Adviser to Oyetola on Political Affairs, stated that the former governor, now has the right of first refusal for the APC’s ticket. However, if Oyetola decides against contesting, the party will prioritize Osun West to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
Speaking in Osogbo on Sunday, Akere emphasized that the APC has capable candidates across all three senatorial districts, but the West holds several credible contenders who can challenge Governor Ademola Adeleke in 2026.
Akere criticized Adeleke’s administration, accusing the governor of mismanaging state resources and neglecting crucial state matters. He highlighted Adeleke’s absence at the state burial of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the nation in honoring the late general.
“Adeleke has wasted state resources on frivolities and spends more time at parties than attending to state affairs. This must end by 2026,” Akere asserted.
He concluded by reiterating the APC's commitment to fairness and discipline, adding that the party’s eventual candidate would be well-positioned to reclaim the governorship.
