The embattled deputy governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday.

The impeachment was served after the report of the seven-member investigation panel that the Assembly constituted to look into Shaibu's alleged misconduct was adopted.

In a dramatic vote, Shaibu was removed from office following impeachment proceedings initiated late last week.

The seven-member panel that was looking into Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, for alleged constitutional violations finished its meeting on Friday without Shaibu or his attorney showing up.

Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the State Chief Judge, received the panel's report.

The seven-member panel led by Justine Stephen A. Omonuwa (Rtd), decided on Thursday that it would adjourn for the final time on Friday to allow Shaibu, the respondent, to present a defence to the charges made against him.

Professor Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN) represented Shaibu during the panel's first meeting on Wednesday. He told the panel that he would not be carrying out the panel's proceedings because the Abuja High Court had requested that all parties involved in a case he had instituted involving the enforcement of fundamental human rights appear on Monday, April 8, 2024, to provide justification for the court's decision to grant or deny the reliefs requested.
