Three weeks ahead of the governorship election in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured journalists that their safety will be prioritized during the coverage of the upcoming election scheduled for November 16.

At a media workshop held in Akure, INEC National Commissioner Sam Olumekun emphasized the need for accurate reporting and urged journalists to refrain from disseminating fake news.

Olumekun, represented by Oluwatoyin Babalola, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, highlighted that INEC has coordinated with security agencies to ensure a secure environment for journalists before, during, and after the election.

He expressed concern about the potential impact of misinformation, stating that it could incite unrest and undermine public trust in the electoral process.

The commissioner called on media professionals to verify information thoroughly, particularly regarding INEC's activities and the electoral framework. He stressed the importance of balanced coverage of all political parties and candidates to maintain objectivity and avoid bias.

In addition, Biodun Amosu, the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, noted that the workshop aimed to equip journalists with essential information about electoral guidelines and procedures.

He reiterated INEC's commitment to conducting a free, fair, transparent, and credible election, emphasizing that cooperation from the media is crucial in achieving these goals.
