Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stated that the federal government can pay more than N100,000 as the minimum wage. Gabam said this during an interview with journalists on Sunday.

He stated that he believes that at this point, the government should do something more than N100,000.

In the meantime, the chairman of the SDP has demanded that the "fuel subsidy" be adjusted.

For months, discussions over a new minimum wage have been locked between the government and trade unions.

Recall that the government was compelled to return to the negotiating table as a result of an industrial action taken by the labour unions that make up the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Labour leaders changed their stance from their previous request of N494,000 to N250,000 and rejected the latest offer of N62,000, up from N60,000.

In response, the SDP leader said that the fuel subsidy removal was the result of actions taken by the Federal Government.

He said such action put the cost of living ahead of the average person.

Governors, however, have stated that they cannot afford to pay the minimum salary of N60,000, calling it unsustainable.
