Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the Nigerian general elections of 2023, has criticised the contentious National Convention of the Party, which was conducted in Nnewi, Anambra State, by the National Working Committee (NWC), chaired by Julius Abure.

Obi made this known on Friday while Speaking to Nigerians in an X Space, which was hosted by Parallel Facts.

Following the “secret” Convention on Wednesday, the party found itself in a more serious situation as the NWC and the Board of Trustees (BoT) battle for control of the LP.

The controversial National Convention was earlier rejected by the BoT, which declared its intention to take control of the Party and referred to it as a charade.

While the National Convention was criticised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Peter Obi claimed that the NWC, led by Julius Abure, did not thoroughly interact with important party stakeholders prior to holding the contentious convention.

The former governor of Anambra underlined the significance of doing the right thing to save the party, saying that he is more interested in creating a new Nigeria than a new Labour Party.

Additionally, he supported the demand for a framework for the "OBIdient" movement.
