Denmark's men's national football team has taken a significant step toward gender equality by refusing a salary increase to ensure the women's national team receives equal pay. This decision reflects a growing trend in sports where athletes and organizations recognize the importance of gender equality and are actively working to close the pay gap between male and female athletes.

According to union spokesman Magnus Hviid, who talked to AFP, the men's team decided not to ask for a pay rise to better the condition of the women's team.

He hailed this unprecedented action to help take this tiny step in the right direction but realized there were still more to be done to provide equal chances and opportunities inside national teams.

According to Hviid, the move secured improved insurance coverage for the women's team in addition to the equal base income for both the men's and women's national teams.

The agreement, which was signed at the end of May, stipulates that men and women will get the same match bonuses when playing away.

There is still, however, a wage gap between the men's and women's national teams overall because there is still no incentive for home games.

Following the summer break, the Danish Football Federation (DBU) and the union have decided to move forward with negotiations on a new contract for the women's national team.

Denmark is competing in Euro 2024 and is currently tied for second place in Group C after drawing twice against England and Slovenia.

Salary equity involves a multidimensional approach that includes law, corporate action, and societal change.
