Idongesit Udoewah

The Minister of Sports Development John Enoh officially announced former international Finidi George as the head coach of the Nigerian senior men's national team, the Super Eagles, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday.

Daniel Amokachi, a former national teammate, and two foreigners have also been selected by the Super Eagles coach to serve as assistants.

Finidi made the statement following his official media unveiling as the new head coach in Abuja.

In addition, he retained Olatunji Baruwa who was the goalkeeper's trainer under Jose Peseiro.

Before the Super Eagles' 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Squirrels of Benin and Bafana Bafana of South Africa, the identities of the two foreign assistants will be made public.

The 53-year-old former Ajax player, who resigned from his position as head coach of Enyimba on Sunday in order to focus on his new role, stated that winning the next two qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic is his immediate priority. He asked for support from the media, stating that the task would not be simple.

The former Nigerian winger was appointed the important position of head coach of the team after the Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro's departure.

George's appointment was revealed a few weeks ago, when he led the team on an interim basis during an international friendly against Ghana and Mali.
