Negotiations for a new contract have begun between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.

“His contract ended in July and we’re now talking to him and his lawyers,” NFF president Ibrahim Gusau said on Wednesday.

Peseiro had been contracted for one year. The contract was based on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, according to Gusau, who claimed that the postponement in that tournament caused a delay in the negotiations.

According to sources, the NFF is requesting that Peseiro accept a significant reduction in his monthly income of $70,000 as part of a new contract that will last at least until the conclusion of the tournament in Ivory Coast.

“We hope to conclude very soon and a decision will be made based on the recommendations of the technical committee,” said Gusau.

On September 10, the Super Eagles host Sao Tome and Principe at home in Uyo to finish their qualifying campaign.

Randy Waldrum's contract as the women's team coach for the nation also expired, according to Gusau, after he led the squad to the Round of 16 of the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The team will begin their qualification campaign for the 2024 Paris Olympics next month, he said, so a decision on Waldrum would also need to be made immediately.
