World Cup Qualifiers: South Africa Holds Nigeria To 1-1 Draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 1-1 with the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Coach Finidi George chose to start Southampton's forward Paul Onuachu to lead the line instead of Bayern Leverkusen's Victor Boniface, with Fisayo Dele-Basiru as another surprise pick in the heart of midfield.

Nigeria hoped to avoid a third consecutive draw in the Group C World Cup qualifiers, but South Africa's Themba Zwane had other plans, as his 28th-minute shot beat Stanley Nwabali for an early lead.

The South African team appeared more disciplined at the defence, with last-minute saves to deny UEFA European League final heroes Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho. Nigeria ended the first half with better possession and started the second half with fresh energy and was rewarded with a fantastic shot from Dele-Basiru, who beat Ronwen Williams for the equalizer.

The arrival of Samuel Chukwueze nearly put the Super Eagles ahead, but the crossbar denied the AC Milan player, keeping the score level.

Despite a torrent of attacks, Bafana Bafana stood firm and finished the game with a draw.

Nigeria remains fifth in the log table with three points, one point behind South Africa, who has four points.
