The Abia State Government has officially announced that it will implement the new minimum wage of N70,000 for its workers starting in October 2024.

This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Tuesday, following a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu emphasized that this decision reflects the government's dedication to enhancing the welfare of state employees and fulfill a promise made by Governor Otti.

He stated, "The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence." He also indicated that while the national minimum wage serves as a guideline, the state is open to making adjustments as necessary.

In addition to the wage announcement, Kanu revealed plans for significant infrastructure improvements, including the commencement of nine new road projects across Abia's three senatorial zones.

He highlighted the success of the "Clean Up Abia Initiative," which has played a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness in urban areas such as Aba and Umuahia.

Furthermore, Kanu noted that Abia State's Environmental Protection Agency has been invited by United Nations Habitat to participate in a conference in Egypt to share insights on effective environmental management practices.
