The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, having passed the bill for its first reading on Thursday.

This initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu alongside eight co-sponsors to improve the study and promotion of Nigerian languages.

According to the bill, once established, the university will provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue higher education focused on Nigerian languages and cultures.

It is designed to develop academic and professional programs that lead to various degrees, emphasizing skills that are essential for national development. The institution will also focus on producing graduates who are proficient in communicating and understanding Nigerian languages.

In addition to its educational mandate, the proposed university is expected to serve as a catalyst for research and innovation, facilitating the effective use and conservation of Nigeria's natural and human resources.

The institution will establish collaborations with other national entities involved in language training and research, thereby fostering a comprehensive approach to language education.

The structure of governance outlined in the bill includes provisions for oversight by the President, who will conduct regular visitations to ensure the university's operations align with its objectives.

The council of the university will have the authority to recommend the removal of members for misconduct or inability to perform their duties, subject to presidential approval.
