Mastercard has partnered with the Lagos Food Bank Initiative to launch a program to provide over 300,000 meals to schoolchildren in underserved communities across Nigeria and Kenya.

This initiative is part of Mastercard's cause marketing campaign, which began in February 2024 in collaboration with Glovo, a multi-category delivery app.

Under this program, each transaction made using a Mastercard-branded card on the Glovo app will result in a meal being donated to a child in need. This effort addresses the critical issue of child hunger, which significantly impacts educational outcomes.

According to the World Food Programme, malnourished children are less likely to achieve basic literacy skills and are at a greater risk of remaining in poverty as adults.

Folasade Femi-Lawal, Mastercard's Country Manager for West Africa, emphasized the company's commitment to social responsibility. She stated that this collaboration is focused on alleviating child hunger, allowing students to concentrate on their education without the distraction of an empty stomach.

Diego Nouet, General Manager for Glovo Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted the importance of partnerships in driving meaningful change. He noted that for many children, access to reliable meals can determine their ability to attend school and succeed academically.

Michael Sunbola, founder and Executive Director of the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, expressed pride in working with Mastercard to ensure that more children receive the nourishment they need to thrive.
