Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, the recently appointed Chancellor of Ekiti State University, has announced the establishment of a ground-breaking N1 billion Innovation Fund intending to assist Agro-tech start-ups created by students and alumni of the institution.

In an electrifying speech during the 28th convocation of Ekiti State University, which was held on April 3 and 4, 2024, Dr. Olowolafe, while congratulating the graduates and the university, announced the audacious project and emphasised how urgent it is to promote innovation and enterprise in agriculture to support food security throughout Nigeria.

Dr. Olowolafe expressed gratitude to Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State and visitors of the university, for deeming him deserving of the position of chancellor.

He stressed the importance of agriculture as the backbone of the nation's economy. He emphasised how local agricultural communities have enormous potential for inclusive prosperity and innovation.

The Chancellor also encouraged lecturers and students to participate actively in food production initiatives. He suggested that they should make the most out of the fertile lands around the University for farming, allowing students to rent small plots and practise farming while still making a living.

Dr. Olowolafe revealed plans to provide a platform for 100 of the university's best minds to participate in global business process outsourcing, allowing them to hone their talents and contribute to the global economy, thereby expanding the scope of his intervention programme beyond agriculture.

The Chancellor also announced the launch of a new programme to support the participation of up to thirty academic staff members in international conferences, training sessions, and research purposes.
