The Anambra State Government announced on Friday that it has closed over 30 illegal health facilities run by quacks to protect the health of the state's residents.

Dr. Afam Obidike, the state Commissioner for Health, made the announcement at the Nigerian Medical Association's 2024 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, Anambra State Chapter, as well as the 5th Prof. Festus Nwako Memorial Lecture.

Obidike stated that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo constituted the State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to combat quackery and eliminate unlawful medical services.

“These quacks were making so much money because they did not have a conscience. They were carrying out surgeries and toying with the health and lives of our people.

“We are appealing to the NMA to partner with the state government to eliminate quackery in the health sector to save people from untimely death and improve their life expectancy,” he said.

The Commissioner stated that the state government is committed to enhancing healthcare delivery in the state.

Obidike stated that the government had begun the construction, renovation, and equipping of public hospitals throughout the state, as well as the massive recruitment of health personnel, to increase access to health care.
