The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, (OAUSTECH) Okitipupa Chapter in Ondo State has criticised the dismissal of five ASUU members from some universities.

Dr. Rotimi Olorunisola, ASUU Chairman at OAUSTECH, revealed to newsmen on Wednesday in Okitipupa that some lecturers were “unlawfully” dismissed by the governing councils of Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), and Ebonyi State University (EBSU).

Olorunisola affirmed that the actions of these institutions were not only against the due process required for the dismissal of academic staff but also an attack on the autonomy of the academic profession.

The don hinted that it was outrageous that lecturers, who were committed to knowledge pursuit, research, and nation-building, should be treated with disregard by their institutions.

Similarly, he noted that the unfair sack of the lecturers was a clear attempt to weaken academic freedom and shot the voices of those who are working tirelessly to preserve the high standards of education in Nigeria.

He said the governing councils acted in direct violation of established labour laws, university statutes, and the principles of natural justice.

“ASUU will not tolerate the unfair treatment and violation of the rights of our members.

“We emphatically state that these dismissals are unlawful, unconstitutional, and a misuse of authority.

He said that ASUU would work together to fight for justice and would be determined to protect the rights and dignity of all academic staff in Nigeria.

“If this problem is not resolved, ASUU will have to take stronger action to protect the rights of our members.

“ASUU will not be intimidated or discouraged by illegal actions that ignore the law and the collective agreements that govern our institutions,” Olorunisola affirmed.
