Atiku Commends Dangote on Refinery Launch

Calls for government support for the private sector.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, commended Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Group, on the start of petrol production from his refinery.

According to a statement via his verified Facebook page on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Atiku also condemned the APC-led Federal Government for its policies, which he asserted to have weakened the confidence of the private sector in Nigeria’s economy.

Recall that on Tuesday, Dangote made a public statement about the start of petrol production at his refinery.

In a press conference, Dangote stressed the importance of this achievement for Nigeria, which had been reliant on importing petroleum products for a long time.

Reacting, Atiku praised Dangote for his perseverance and determination in establishing the Dangote refinery, which has now started producing Premium Motor Spirits (PMS). He emphasised Dangote's belief in Nigeria and his ability to achieve great things.

“This achievement is more than just a testament to Dangote's business skills. It shows what Nigerian corporations can do to revitalise the economy and make it robust. This aligns with my vision of a larger role for the private sector in Nigeria's economy. I strongly believe that the private sector should play a significant part in key economic areas, either independently or in collaboration with the government.”

"Nigerians understand the challenges Dangote faced in achieving this success. For the private sector to invest, create jobs, and boost growth, the government needs to introduce more supportive policies and implement them effectively. The APC government's'reform' initiatives since 2015 have damaged investor confidence and discouraged foreign investment."

“As Nigeria works towards becoming energy independent, there are several important milestones to achieve. I hope Dangote will continue to support this endeavour."
