The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed strong opposition to a new tax policy imposed by the Abia State government on church signposts.

In a letter dated October 22, 2024, signed by Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the state chairman and secretary respectively, CAN lamented that Abia is the only state in Nigeria taxing churches for their signposts.

The letter criticized the policy as regrettable, emphasizing that it could foster a perception among Christians that the state government is anti-Church.

CAN urged Governor Alex Otti to reconsider the taxation policy, stressing the need for dialogue with Christian leaders in the state to address this sensitive issue.

In their plea, CAN highlighted the importance of maintaining a supportive relationship between the church and the government, expressing hope for a favorable response from the governor while reaffirming their commitment to prayer and support for his administration.
