The Department of State Services (DSS) has released two protesters associated with the #EndBadGovernance movement from detention in Kaduna.
This release occurred over the weekend, while approximately 125 other protesters remain in custody, including 38 who have been remanded by Justice Emeka Nwite in Abuja.
As of the latest updates, these 38 detainees are scheduled to appear before Justice Nwite for a bail hearing. Many of the detained protesters have now spent over 62 days in custody.
Concerns regarding transparency in the judicial process have been raised by Mr. Deji Adeyanju, the legal representative for the protesters. He noted that while authorities claim to have filed charges, his legal team has not yet received any official documentation regarding these charges.
While a significant number of the 873 protesters arrested in Kano have been released through the efforts of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the situation remains dire for those detained elsewhere. Recent developments in Sokoto also indicate some progress, with two protesters released in that region.
The #EndBadGovernance protests began as a response to escalating economic hardships and widespread hunger in Nigeria. However, the demonstrations have at times escalated into violence, leading to casualties and numerous arrests across various states.
