The Active Citizens Group Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, has informed the state commissioner of police, CP Adegoke M. Fayoade, of their intention to participate in the intended nationwide protest from August 1 to 10, 2024.

Adamma Ukpabi, the group’s state coordinator, notified the police of the peaceful protest plans in a written communication, citing rights to free speech and assembly.

According to the written communication, the protest is planned to take place on two selected routes: the mainland route, beginning at NAHCO Bus Stop and ending at International Airport, Ikeja, and the island route, beginning at Marwa Bus Stop, Lekki Phase 1, and ending at Eti-Osa Local Government.

While stating their goal to peacefully express their constitutional rights to free speech and gather together as permitted by the constitution, the group says they intend to call for better leadership and transparency from elected officials.

The group requested police presence at both protest locations to maintain order, control traffic flow, and minimise public inconvenience.

"We trust in the professionalism and commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to support public safety and safeguard citizens’ rights. We welcome any input or recommendations you may have to ensure the success of these peaceful protests,” the letter read.

The intended nationwide protest has gained traction all over the country, especially on social media.

The Defence Headquarters has expressed concerns that the upcoming nationwide protest could turn violent, similar to the protests in Kenya that started peacefully but eventually led to widespread unrest.

The protest, under the banner #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, is against the current financial difficulty in Nigeria.
