The Lagos State Government has praised the Supreme Court's recent ruling that nullified the National Lottery Act, affirming the authority of state governments to regulate lotteries and gaming activities.
In a statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government hailed the judgment as a "historic victory for the rule of law, federalism, and the constitutional rights of states."
Omotoso emphasized that the ruling confirms that lottery regulation is a residual matter, firmly within the jurisdiction of state governments.
"The Supreme Court's decision is a significant affirmation that the regulation of lotteries and gaming falls exclusively under state authority," he stated. He noted that this ruling reinforces true federalism, allowing states to effectively manage their regulatory frameworks.
Omotoso also highlighted that this judgment vindicates President Bola Tinubu's long-standing belief in true federalism, expressing satisfaction that his restructuring efforts are materializing during this administration.
He acknowledged the contributions of former Governor Babatunde Fashola and current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stating their commitment to integrity in governance has been crucial in achieving this outcome.
The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) will continue to serve as the sole regulatory body for lotteries and gaming in Lagos, ensuring operations are conducted transparently and responsibly.
The government urged all unlicensed lottery operators to seek regularization or face legal consequences, reaffirming its commitment to fostering a conducive environment for legitimate gaming operators while protecting residents from unregulated activities.
